This special issue of the IEEE JOURNAL ON BIOMEDICAL AND HEALTH INFORMATICS (JBHI) presents full articles of the work presented at the 37th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC 2015), which was held in Milano, Italy, from August 25–29. We are extremely pleased to deliver the special issue that contains best presentations of EMBC 2015. This inaugurates a strong collaboration of the JBHI and the EMBC conferences. Full extended papers from top-rated papers by EMBS Technical Committees and high-scoring papers at the conference were invited to submit. The regular review process was performed to keep the paper quality high. From the 12 originally invited papers, 6 papers were submitted and 4 papers successfully passed very tough reviewing process to be included in the special issue.
